Feeding question

redgiant Jun 05, 2003 09:52 PM

I am currently looking for as much information as possible, i would like a black throat. I saw on the FAQ site that growing monitors should be fed everyday....now i dont see many people doing this, any advice?

this is what i practice, take it for what you will, it seems to have atleast some success as i am actively producing viable clutches and babies.

newborns: i feed everyday (odatria=crickets, large=crickets and pinks)

subadults: I feed odatria everyday, large, everyother day

adults: odatria everyday, large every two or three days.

remember that growth (atleast i have gathered this empirically from observations here) is not limited to how much you feed but at what temps you keep them at, stress levels, etc.

cheers

Who is it you see that doesn't feed a baby monitor everyday?
I think its common sense a growing animal needs to eat small amounts often. Is it one of your friends? Please speak up when you see people neglecting an animal, even if its a friend. Do it nicely, but please make an effort for that animal's sake. Captives often have no one to speak for them.
Cheers. D.

Yes, unfortunately my friend. He was told by the pet shop that he bought it from to feed them every other, as much as they can eat,for the rest of its life. I must tell my friend to stop. Thank you for your help.Is there any other information about black throats that anyone can give me?

thanks

It all depends on temps and environment. Almost every day my monitors eat when under a year old or if they are catching up with growth like my one cross whos growing pretty fast at over 2 years old. The animal has to make use of whats being fed or it builds as fat stores. Now my big BT/WT cross eats once or twice a week at over a year and a half old, I slowed his food intake down sometime after a year old when his growth slowed down to every other day or less, and slowed his food intake since.
