Two turtles in one tank?

stacy680 Jan 17, 2004 11:13 AM

I have a 7 year old RES that is 7 inches that I've had for three years. I would like to get another RES, one that is over 4 inches. Since these turtles would be similar in size, would they be able to get along in the same tank?

That depends...How big is your tank? Is your turtle male or
female?

My tank is 30 gallons right now, and the one I have is female.

That would be a no. Your tank is not big enough for two turtles. It's actually small for an adult female slider. Plus, I've seen female sliders that fight with each other to the point of removing toes. If you were to get a male, you'd have a greater chance of the female egg-binding. If you can't get a substantially larger tank, or preferably a pond, then I'd stick with one turtle.

Many people follow the rule of thumb `10 gallons per inch of turtle.` They need a lot of room to swim and exercise. If you think about it, how would you like to spend your entire life in something only the size of a walk-in-closet? The bigger a tank the happier your turtle would be.
I wouldn`t consider adding another turtle until you have at least a 100 gallon tank. And even then it might not be adviseable.
