Tips Requested on raising fire salamander larvae

brugaugler Jan 17, 2004 12:24 PM

My fire salamander female has given birth to over 10 gilled babies. I have removed them from the adult cage and put them in 2" of water with an air stone, and have included some plastic hiding vegetation. I have offered blood worms and have observed feeding. I have a couple of easy questions:

1) How often should food be offered?
2) Is my setup OK?
3) What other foods should be offered?
4) What is the typical duration until the gills disappear?
5) Any other hints?

Thanks in advance. -Larry in NYC

1) At least once per day.
2) Yes, but with a small water volume you need to change half the water every day (including, of course, removal of ALL uneaten food) Do not use gravel or cleanup will be impossible.
3) Best bet is live blackworms if you can get them. See: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/microfoods.shtml
4) I'm not sure for fire sals. I think it varies from weeks to months.
5) See: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/raising.shtml
