Spilotes starting to pip...

afflicted Jun 05, 2003 10:27 PM

Well, at the time of laying, I candled all the eggs and only saw veins in one egg. Three other eggs looked perfect so I incubated them as well. After all is said and done, the one egg with veins is the one egg that hatched, the others went bad. On the good side, this one started slitting the egg on day 73 which is about five days sooner than expected at the temp I incubated at.

without disturbing the hatchling too much, it appears to be another high yellow. I actually saw more of it when I first looked but it then rolled to show more belly when I took the pic. I guess I will know tomorrow or so when it emerges. I will take more pics when it comes out, hopefully a perfect baby.

I was wondering (pardon me I'm brand spanking new to spilotes) but with kingsnake eggs, you always assume (unless incubation space is limited) that the eggs are good until they go bad, and you don't expect to see veins for several days after laying. Is this different with Spilotes?

Also, how many eggs do they normally have?

And, what is a good size/weight to begin to consider breeding them...?

Plus... do they need to be brumated? Do they have different requirements than kingsnakes...?

Oh jeepers... just have all the questions in the world.

I never got real heavy into colubrids but did breed my fair share of milks and beauties some time ago. Those snakes were kind of like, "oh, more eggs". I never candled them, just incubated them and whatever happened so be it. These I candle just for my own sanity, my fertility rates are usually pretty low(due to high temps during breeding I think). I am usually right on the money when I use this practice to candle, however. I usually don't mess with python eggs once they are laid but I can tell you this, spilotes eggs are thick and after a couple of days they become impermeable to light(atleast for any candling to occur). The baby has emerged but I won't be able to post any pics until later, very healthy, robust little guy like usual.
