Help! The Mouse BIT the hell outta my Snake!!!!

Alan Jan 17, 2004 05:49 PM

Help! My poor Dumeril Boa was savagely attacked by a little white mouse - you should see my poor Dumeril! I made the mistake - Yes I DID - I left the mouse in the tank with the Dumeril over night to prompt it to feed - well the Mouse fed on my poor snake, and now the Dumeril doesn't even look like a dumeril..

My question is: What medical treatment can I offer his wounds???

Get him to a vet NOW.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

For now you can treat the wounds topically by gently "painting" them in a Q-tip dipped in Betadine antiseptic solution (not the cleanser) which you should be able to find at any drug store. For numerous small wounds you can also soak the snake in a diluted Betadine solution. Add it to tepid water until it is tea coloured. If you cannot find Betadine then use Neosporin or a similar human antibiotic ointment on the wounds. Keep him warm and on a paper substrate. You will need to get him to a vet asap for systemic antibiotics. Puncture wounds from rodent bites easily lead to sepsis. Good luck.
