Pics of my new White's "Trevor"

Lyn Jan 17, 2004 06:51 PM

Thank you to everyone who has been answering my questions about White's Tree Frogs. I am still hoping to some day find a True Blue, no luck so far. I was pondering an imported Indonesian White's but this morning I read how someone on here found Australian White's at Petco. I stopped into my local Petco today and sure enough they had 3 Captive Bred Australian White's. My Petco isn't one of the really bad ones. I don't agree with some of the substrates they use with their lizards or snakes, but their frog enclosures actually looked very nice. They were asking $13.66 for them which I thought wasn't too bad. He's green now, but I'm hoping he'll go through color changes like I've heard they do and will at least sometimes be more aqua.

Here's some pics of my new guy "Trevor" (I'm thinking of him as a boy for now although I really don't have a clue if he's a boy or girl)

He's just under 3 inches long, do you know about how old he might be?

Checking out his new home...

He doesn't have a lot of fat on him, I'm still not really sure what to look for to determine total health and good weight. Does he look ok to you? Do you see anything wrong with him that I might have missed? He scared me when I went down to check on him, the lower half of his eye was all blurry. I was so upset I hadn't noticed it at the store. Really wierd, just the lower half of the eye. I took him out and the eye looked fine. Hmmmm. I was thinking it must be the angle and was looking at him from all diff angles when he "blinked" at me. Ohhhhhhh. That's what it was! He had been sitting there with that funny eyelid half "up" making his eye look cloudy. Whew!!!

Here's another pic. Can you see the one patch that is lighter than the rest of him? It was like that at the store and has been like that since I got him home. Is this normal? I'm hoping not a sign of something wrong. It looks neat so I'm hoping it stays there as long as it's not something bad.

Thanks for looking, and thanks againg for all the help!

People who say that Whites grow into their color are sadly mistaken. That is his permanant color, and with the exception of the normal shade changes in his range, he will not "come into his color". Either a frog is blue, or it is not. People who say otherwise have more than likely never owned or even seen a true blue frog. It is not something that they come into with time or age.
Yes, he could stand to put on some weight, and those spots could be dermatitis from something that he come in contact with while he was at the shop. Watch it, if it doesnt go away, that is most likely what it is.

I put 5 crickets in and some mealworms. There are alot of places for the crickets to hide in his enclosure. I'm concerned he'll have trouble finding/catching them. Do you put your crickets in some type of container or just let them loose in the enclosures? I know a high tank is better than a long one, and I will keep an eye out for a nice high one for him. Is it ok for me to put more crickets in to increase his chance of finding/catching some?

As for the color, I know he'll never be true blue but I've seen pics and read how the normal ones can change from brown to green to aqua. Not sure what makes them change, temp or humidity or season? If that's true, isn't it possible he could have a more aqua color sometimes? I know he'll never turn permanently aqua, but just sometimes would be nice. Of course I'll love him just the same if he's always green

try hand feeding him by dangling the crickets in front of his face so you know for sure he ate. Thats the method i use

hope it helps and good luck

I have a true blue. And since I can not for the life of me work the freakin camera, the color is so not CLOSE to what color she really is. I got her at a locally owned pet store, special ordered. I BELIEVE they get their herps from cali. zoo supply. She is soooo pretty, as soon as I can get some GOOD pics of her (I'll get someone ELSE to take the pics) I am going to carry the pics with me. I brought her to a pet store to get sexed, and I got SO many complements on her "That is the most beautiful frog I have ever seen!! WOW!!" ect. And the Petco that I work at has two true blues, the first I have ever seen in there.
I very much agree with the last two comments. Color doesn't change over time. It changes with lighting, how comfortable they are, ect. I have a whites that is normally brown, but when you take him out, he turns deep green!! Anyway, I will be breeding (crosses fingers) my blue this spring, so maybe I'll send you a couple!!
Goodluck!!

Correct, what I was saying is that the overall color of the frog does not change. A green frog will not turn any more blue, aqua, teal, etc., that it already is. Whatever color the frog is at it's most comfortable state is the frogs permanent color. That color, whether it be lime green or pale green, is the color that your frog is. That can change according to lighting, temps, health, etc., by getting deeper or by turning various brown-purple shades, but that's about as far as color changing goes.
I'm hoping that makes sense, I'm trying not to get into pigments and shades and epidermal cells and all of that jazz, but to put it simply, a puke green frog will stay a puke green frog. A lime green frog will remain lime green. Although they do change colors according to temps, "mood," and other external factors, beneath all of that, your frog is still the same green it was before.

You can try a green colour enhancer and dust the food with it. That may help a bit to become more vivid, and maybe darken.

I really dont think you should suggest that. you shouldnt chemically change your frogs pigment to your liking.

I love the terrarium with the exception of the substrate. That stuff really looks easily ingestible (especially if you have crix loose) and artificially dyed.

Anyway, let us know how your frog is and if the light spots clear up.
