Bleeding eye

A.D. Jun 05, 2003 10:48 PM

2 days ago I bought my first Red Eyed Treefrog. Once I got home I noticed that one eye had a dark brown spot on the pupil. I thought it was a bit of dirt but the following day it got worse and looked like coagulated blood. It's a sort of jello thing covering the eye. I could gently remove a bit of it, but the eye is still the same: brown and opaque.
Is the frog infected or could the eye be damaged inside?
I remember that the guy in the shop accidentally dropped the frog on the floor (actually the frog jumped away). But it landed on his 4 hands like a cat and I thought it was fine.
My other tree frogs did the same before and they are still in perfect health.
But at this point I'm not sure..what can it be and how can I help this poor animal?
Sucks seeing such a beautiful species with a problem like this.

This problem goes far above any common ailment of frogs in captivity. This frog requires the care of a veterinarian and should go immediately. Who knows what underlying causes there are associated with an ophthalmic problem like this. In the future I advise you to do a more thorough inspection of the animals before you get them, hopefully that will prevent any problems such as this.

You are right, I should have checked before, but the problem got worse. The first day was there but hard to notice and I doubt I could see it in the shop. I suspect the frog got a trauma due to a long jump on the floor from the salesman hands (what a bad salesman, I add...). I saw it, but my treefrogs do that too and they are fine, so I thought: if the frog is ok when the guy picks him up he might be fine.
After 2 days I took the frog to the shop hoping they could help me. They didn't care cos it was sold already.
Yesterday the frog died in my home.
I had it for 3 days.
Ok, I learned something from this, but I'm done with that shop. They can't take care of their animals and customers. Why do they even have a business like that?

PS a frog dying in 3 days didnn't allow me to even search for frogs vet. In Hong Kong is hard to find them and when I did it was too late. I keep the addresses for the future.
