Misting system pump Q's

solomon Jan 17, 2004 08:33 PM

Hi there,

I want to build myself a misting sytem for 3 chameleons, and was considering using a window washer fluid pump. The only cons I think of are oil being in the pump, making the water no good for drinking, and not enought pressure to achieve a fine mist.

Has anyone tried this? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you seen the misting kit at herpcages? They have a kit that you hook up to a garden sprayer. i dont know how it works yet but I have one on the way.The url is http://herpcages.com/accessor/accessor.htm

I would discourage you from using a windshield washer pump. You'll likely run into a lot of hassle hooking it up to run off of household current (110v) as it is probably wired to run off of 12v DC. Instead there are a couple other choices. The other poster mentioned the misting system designed by BARRS (www.barrs.com). You can buy a kit with nozzles and hose from them for about $15.00. You purchase a battery operated digital sprinkler timer and use it to control your misting cycles. There diagrams are pretty easy to follow. Your second choice is to use an electric piston pump hooked up to a digital household timer. You can purchase a 55 psi pump from Able Supply (www.ablesupply.com). The actual pump you want is the AP30 made by Flojet

(http://www.ablesupply.com/common/order_browse.html?search_type=websearch&web_class_opt=zzz&search_val=flojet pump&item_find_start=5).

It sells for $39.95. You can get the timer from a Home Depot or Lowe's for $29.00, 5 gallon bucket with lid for about $5.00, misc. fittings, teflon tape, etc. about another $5.00. Add on your misting system parts from BARRS and you've got a rather nice system for less than $100.

I'm about to tinker with this idea.I found the mist heads that go onto the"Snake"patio mister at Lowes.Fixed to one end of some flex tubing running it to a five gallon bucket that houses a Rio pump set on a timer.Reducing only at the pump to help with the distance it has to travel up.See any probs with this besides maybe buying a pump with not enough flow?

Well I ordered some misting nozzles from barrs, and in the meantime I'm using some garden sprikler nozzles that I found in Home Depot. I hooked the tubing up to my garden mister and it all seems to work well. In the future I want to order a pump, I've looked at some of the links and was curious as to what others have used and reccomend?

Thanks for the help. Now it sounds like rain.
