Getting a red eared to eat?

turtlemix21 Jun 05, 2003 11:05 PM

Hi , I just acquired an 11" female red-eared slider from a lady. Currently she is in a baby pool in my grage, and I can't get her to eat?? I have an out door pond set up and ready for her, but the weather in chicago hasn't been very friendly to us yet. On the warmer days I put her outside, but can't until it stays warmer. Anyways, the lady that gave her to me said she ate goldfish, brineshrimp. I have had her a week and seh will not eat!! I have tried feeder fish, pellets, and frozen food. Any suggestions?? Thanks Matt

Could be she is getting used to her new environment, or she's getting ready to lay eggs (tis the season)

The ones in Alabama have already hatched. I caught 7 yesterday, its so easy they swim right up to the boat and we used our hands and dip nets to catch them. Sadly one was eaten by a big bass before we could get to it.

I would think that it's mostly environment related...she's had a big change and is still getting used to her new surroundings and new human. A few weeks without food is not a catastophe. However, much after that point you'll need to dig into your bag of tricks and inspire her to eat.

I have heard that salmon and shrimp are very tempting and good for breaking the will of the determined non-eater. Then once you have it eating, you can start to introduce other items like Reptomin and veggies and start scaling back on the meats, since adults should have a low-protein diet. But don't worry about that just yet...just keep tempting till she eats. When she's cool with her new surroundings she'll come around.
