RETF - help please

flegaspi Jan 17, 2004 09:38 PM

I just became the owner of two young RETFs. I have them in a 16gallon extra tall tank with shallow water source, subtrate of pepples covererd by reptile/amphibian carpet and then topped with moss. Temperature btw75-80, humidity~80. Lots of large leaves and branches for them.

Question - how active should they become as soon as the night cycle starts? I have not been able to observe (moving, eating, etc) them to ensure their health because they seem slow to wake (and I have to get to sleep!) What else can I do to gage if they are doing OK (I got them 5 days ago)

Their color seems OK and they are sticking to the side of the tank with ease.

Also - I am using a night-glo moonlight so that I can view them - this is OK, right?

Help is greatly appreciated. thks.

What kind of moss? I would change the substrate to a milled coconut husk type (or something similar, Bed-A-Beast is an example) and ditch gravel altogether unless you're doing a false bottom and the gravel is physically separated.

RETFs usually wake when there is no light and no movement in a room, at least until they are well settled in. They are highly nocturnal and less likely than other popular treefrogs to be up in dimly lit conditions or during the entire night. Mine are only up the last 4-6 hours of the night on average, although it varies. Just be sure they are eating (you should probably separate them to make sure they are each eating well) and change the water daily. Also, a 16-gallon isn't enough for two adults so you will probably need to go to something like a 25-gallon or larger terrarium as they grow.
