question on Shedding...

nickvree Jan 17, 2004 09:50 PM

so this morning I woke up to find my leo shedding and eating the skin. I know its normal. I also know that there is concern about the old skin not getting off his toes and getting the circulation cut off... my question is how can I tell if there is old skin on there still? anyone have a sample pic of the skin still on the toes? AND, if I find there's still some on there, how can I get it off, considering he won't even let me hold him yet? (I just got him like 3 days ago at PetCo (yes, the cardinal sin of a petstore

btw, I do have a humid hide.

You'll see bits of skin stuck to his toes if he doesn't get it all off. You can give him a warmish bath (water up to his shoulders) for 30 min if he still has skin on his toes or anywhere else on his body. Then use a Q-tip to try and loosen the skin off, if it's still stubborn and won't come off, repeat the bath.

PetCo is not as bad around where I live (Ann Arbor, MI). I bought a gecko from there and got a fecal done and found pinworms, so they're going to reimburse me for the vet bills since it was found within the 15 day warranty period (vet bills came out to about twice the price of the gecko). Other than the pinworms, the gecko has excellent health (and pinworms aren't that big a deal either).

so it'll be obviously still on there? like it'll be little flaps of skin hangin off?

and I don't think this petco was that bad, the employees seemed reasonably decent w/ their knowledge (trust me, I quizzed them, cause I had done A LOT of research before I got him).

definitely not as bad as the petsmarts I went to... one had a gecko that had recently lost its tail, and the other one the employee picked up the leo, or tried to, and he fell back into the cage, and she tried to do it again! and he bit her cause he was pissed....
