More Cage Height or Depth for IJ?

NCJay Jan 17, 2004 10:46 PM

If I had to choose more cage height or more cage depth for an IJ, which would be the better choice? For example, 36Lx24Dx18H or 36Lx18Dx24H? I'm just beginning to learn about IJs and their needs, but I was thinking they'd appreciate the extra climbing height more. Thanks for your opinions.

....more floor space becuase in the long run that snake is going to get larger and not perch off the ground nearly as much. 36Lx24Dx18H would be just fine while at the same time, you still have plenty of height to provide a perch. In my opinion, the snake won't care if it is perched only 4 inches above the ground versus 14 inches. They don't seem to know any different.
Good luck.

Yasser,
Thanks for the reply. I've been reading a lot of your posts on here, and consider your opinion to be a valuable one.

As far as a heating method for IJs, I was thinking of going with an overhead helix radiant panel as opposed to sub-floor flexwatt. Any preference from your experiences? Again, I appreciate the insight.

Radiant heat panels are tops in my opinion.

What is an adequately sized radiant panel for a 36x24x18 cage? How about a 48x24x18? Thanks for your help.

I get all my heat panels through Bob Pound at Pro Products. I give him the cage details, and temperatures desired, and he sends me the right sized heat panel for the job.

I have cages that are that size and I heat mine with 11 inch flexwatt that is plugged into a dimmer. Keep in mind I also heat my room to 80. I can adjust the temp of the hot spot with the dimmer and the dimmer and flexwatt is very inexpensive. This is way more affordable than a heat panel but if you can afford it heat panels are nice. If money was not an issue I would go with radiant heat panels and proportional Helix thermostats.
