New PTS not eating, what do I do?

jrbl Jan 18, 2004 12:06 AM

Hi,
I have had my little 4 month old PTS for four days now, and it hasn't eaten. Well it has eaten, but that was just a few peices of banana out of my hand. I have offered food all three days in the evening. I have offered collard greens, mustard greens, green beans, banana, acorn squash, carrot, and mixed frozen veggies. I have also offer a few pothos leaves, should I put a pothos in with it to offer "fresh food"? It hasn't touched the food in its enclosure, but showed interest in it when I held pecies of banana out in my hand when I held it. The company I got it from said they fed it Mustard greens, collard greens, banana, Zoo Med omnivore diet (canned), Rep-Cal Tortoise pellets, and banana squash. Sould I maybe change what I am offering to match what they were feeeding it? I figured it probably would not eat for the first couple of days while it was getting settled in, but now I am getting a little worried. I am planning on getting a "Salad Topper" from cricketfood.com, but it will not be here for a while. Should I be worried? I am keeping the temp in the lower 80's during the day and upper 70's at night, so I don't think it is too cold to eat. Any advice would be greatly appreciate. Thank you, jrbl

Also what kind of enclosure are you keeping the newborn in? How is it set up, as far as substrate, hides, clmbing areas, is the enclosure located in a high traffic area of your home? Four days definately is not enough time for the skink to settle in and feel safe and comfortable, It took almost 3 months for a juvenile skink that I recently adopted!! I would raise the heat to the low 90's for starters during the day and high 70's to low 80's during the night. Next time you offer food to your skink, mist down the whole enclosure very heavily as if it just rained, this usually always stimulates a feeding response in any of my Monkey Tail Skinks.
Good Luck

My Leonardo didnt eat at all when he first arrived home.If i was you id put some pothos plant vases inside his enclosure so he can eat whenever he wants. My Leonardo loves to eat pothos at 3 or 4 o clock in the morning!
Why dont you try to put some drops of vitamins to increase the appetite inside his bowl of water? It worked with Leonardo!

Flavia, as well as everyone else,
Thank you for your advice and input. I put one of my big pothos plants in with the PTS and sprayed down the whole cage. A few minutes later, I was sitting in front of the computer, and I heard some crunching. At first I did not know what it was, but then I went over to the PTS cage and it was munching away on the pothos!!! Since it has an appetite, I am hoping it will go to the food dish and eat something other than pothos. The PTS looked so cute munching on the huge pothos leaves. The leaf it was eating was a few times the size of its head! I still hear the crunching of the pothos. I am so happy it is eating something. Thank you all for your help, jrbl

Make sure your baby is properly hydrated. Based on much experience, when PTS stop eating (for whatever reason), they get dehydrated. Once they are dehydrated, they won't eat until they drink first. Gently spray your baby with water. If it starts licking, aim for the mouth. Also, offer it a watery dish of grated apple. it may lap it up, like a cat.

Good luck.

Keep us posted.
