HELP! What's wrong with my geckos?

blizzy Jan 18, 2004 07:37 AM

Hi,

I bought 6 geckos from Ray Hine in november last year. They did very well but now they seem to be not that healthy... The tank is big enough, the temperature is good, they have enough food and drink... I really don't know what's going wrong
My friend's leos are so quick and active... But mine are very slow and I really can't compare them to my friend's leos... Also my male shakes with his leggs wen he walks... I checked their poop, but that was ok! Is somebody able to help?

It sounds like your leos need some calcium, do you dust there feed with calcium and vitamins. Also check that the tanks heating is working and at the right temp. How big is the tank?

The tank is 120cm x 30cm x 40cm for 6 animals. I give them calcium and vits! Well, in november the temperature was good (around 27°C), but right now, it's around 20°C, maybe that's too low?

i would have a separate dish of calcium available at all times. then, when you dust the food, make sure you alternate the vitamins and calcium, don't mix them (the vitamins makes the calcium not get absorbed or something, i don't entirely understand how).

are they eating still? what's their diet? how old are they, how big are they, and what substrate are they on? do you have a temperature spectrum throughout the tank (a hot end & a cooler end)? also (just cause i'm a bit slow, hehe), do you know what size (in gallons) is equivalent to the measurements you gave for your tank?

In Europe we don't count in gallons, so I don't know how many gallons... But it is certainly big enough! They have a hot end and a cooler end so that's not the problem. Maybe I have to give them more calcium. I dust the food but I have no calcium apart from the food in the tank. I will try that. Also what's the best thing to do to heat the tank more? There is one lamp and one heating math in it.

i'm really not an expert, but a heating mat of the right size (i think it's supposed to be about a third the length of the tank), should heat it enough. though i also have one tank where the mat isn't enough, i'm not sure why, so i added a lamp. i would suggest just raising the temperature in the room, or moving them to a different room. i can't remember how to convert in my head, but the hot end (during the day) should be in the higher 80s F, and the cool end in the 70s F. maybe try and get the room temperature to about 22 C or so? also, i might have misunderstood, but the mat is under the tank, not in it, right?

1 inch = about 2.5 cm
so
120cm x 30cm x 40cm =
48" x 12" x 16"

Wow, you're lookin at about a 40L!!

i re-read your post, and the male sounds mostly like mbd. are his legs rubbery? i've heard that if you add lots of calcium, sometimes they can totally recover. i've also read posts from some people, where they dissolved some calcium powder in their water dish- that sounds like a good idea, just in case they don't realize that they should eat the calcium in a separate dish. one of my geckoes is like that, she will never learn- she poops in her calcium dish, all over her expensive calcium powder, it drives me nuts!
