Green Tree Frog, a little too calm-getting old? (pretty long)

frogsandchams Jan 18, 2004 09:43 AM

I have 2 Green Tree Frogs. One I just got last August, the other I think I've had for 2-3 years. How long do they last? The first 2 years that I've owned her, she's had a heat light, not too strong, but it was also a big tank. When some of her tank mates eventually died, I eventually put her in a nicer tall tank, but read that Green Tree Frogs really do not need heat light, the heat from room temp is enough. So I placed a small under tank heater under the tank. Is this warm enough. Don't know about you, but under tank heaters really don't register too good with thermometers with me. Anyway, back to the frog, I noticed the past week that she was always on the ground, so on Friday night, I saw her besides the water dish, and her legs were sprawled out, like she was dieing. So, I placed her in a temporary tank with a wet paper towel as substrate, thinking she was going to die overnight anyway. Well, the next morning, she was sitting up and alert. She is still in the plastic tank, won't eat, but she looks healthy and plump, and turns around. Just doesn't climb. She sits on my hand and tries not to jump. Her feet still have this nervous twitch to them when you look at them. So, you think she is able to join her tankmate? Just place her on the ground? Is she just getting old?

Take out the UTH and go back to using a heat lamp, but something that's not too hot. What are your temps in the room with the frog and in the cage?

I wouldn't put the frog with the others yet, just incase. Sometimes frogs show signs of disease or distress only at times and it doesn't mean the frog is healthy when it acts normal. Just keep monitoring your frog and good luck with it.

The temps in the room are high 60"S, low 70's (There are a bunch of herps in that room anyway so it can't be too cold, also with all the heat lamps in there also). I check the temp inside the tank with a portable digital thermometer and it was in the mid-high 70's. The frog still looks the same. Not eating, yet looks normal besides not jumping. What I am doing yesterday and today after much research on the web was put Pedialyte and a drip of honey in the water and making her sit in it for periods of a time. Yesterday she actually jumped in it herself and jumped out of my hand. Hopefully thats in improvement. I am thinking of bringing her to the vet if she doesn't improve.
