brumating behavior ?!?! please help

brianz Jun 05, 2003 11:47 PM

My otherwise healthy 3 yr old dragon has begun, in the past week, to spend most of her time on the dark side of the tank. She has very little appetite too, even after I put her on her branch. She stays on the branch if I put her there, but no interest in food except for a couple worms and some raspberries in the past week. I'd say she's eaten just 15-20% of normal.

This all started last week. She had a complete shed finish about 2 weeks ago, if that matters. Stools are normal (though it's been a week), appearance normal, well-hydrated, no change in environment or temps... what's the deal? It's EXACTLY the same as when she starts to brumate!

Any ideas?? What can I do or watch out for?

Thanks,

Brian

Take a fecal sample in for a check (when you can get one), if it's clean, then let your beardie do what it needs to do. Most beardies brumate in the winter months, but that isn't the law. They can brumate anytime they feel like it. I have one doing it now, a kind of half brumation. He lays in his half log and watches the world go buy.
They come out of it when they are ready. Some people say to crank the heat up to bring them out of it, but I see it as natures way and think they should just be left alone to do what their body is telling them to do.

Thanks, that's good to know. She brumated early last year, starting in August, but I figured it's way too early now - not even solstice. But if they do it anytime, maybe she's just having a rest. I'll take a sample in if I can get one though.
