wd breathing strange

BillieJo1225 Jan 18, 2004 10:42 AM

Hi, we have had our wd since july and he has really thrived, almost 22 inches long. Yesterday my husband was taking him out of his cage and put him on his chest, he climbed up to his shoulder and leaped off landing on the carpet. My husband said he instanly started to gape at the mouth. He has since started to breath heavily and when he breathes his throat moves in and out. Like, it is filling with air and then he breaths out. Is this normal (throat)? we have never really seen him do this. This morning he is not really gaping anymore. And this breathing has slowed down but he is still breathing with his throat. He has a good appetite. Is this something to worry about? Last night we thought he was going into some kind of respiratory failure. This morning he just seems a little abnormal. Could it have just been stress related? Thanks for any advice.

He fell a little over 5 feet, from my husband shoulder to the ground. He is more like himself today, thank goodness! But i noticed when he came out in the living room on his tree he started to breath heavy again. Not as bad as last night. But that throat breathing again.

i would take him to the vet, 5 feet is a good distance to fall. he could have some internal injuries.
good luck!
