Cuban Boa had a little "blood in her urine"?

kottonmouthking Jan 18, 2004 10:51 AM

I posted about this on the Boa and Feeder Food forum a few days ago before I had time to really figure out the scenario. Just wondering if anyone had any opinions here. 3 nights ago, my 5 foot female Cuban left a few spots of blood in her cage. I couldn't figure out where it came from and looked her over for abrasions and didn't find any. I figured by the trail (leading away from urates)it must have came from her cloaca after she peed. Last night she finished "excreting" a very large rat I gave her a little over a week ago. Which I wasn't sure if that could've cause internal bleeding. But there is no sign of any blood this time. So I'm just wondering if that's a common thing for a snake to have some blood after relieving itself or is it something I should be worried about and keep an eye on in the future? Again, it was like 5 very small spots of blood following the path her tail took after dropping the urates. Not alot at all. Someone in the boa forum mentioned about some pythons almost having a period when it's time to breed. I hadn't even considered that. But I'd think she'd need at least another year before breeding anyway. I just lost an adult male Surinam redtail last week so I'm really paranoid about something being wrong with another one of my favorite animals. Any opinions are greatly appreciated. Oh, and sorry so long.

My Spilotes pullatus leave sometimes blood traces.
The blood come from the cloaca region, which can easily bleed.
Maybe it's due to irritation/bacterial infection of the cloacal region and/or the cloacal glands, but I don't worry about this:
my snakes are otherwise healthy and parasite free.
When they defecate, they can extrude the anal region, and rub it over the substrate...and then I see blood traces.
I think you don't need to worry.

But make anyway a fecal flotation to look for worms and coccidia...
