introducing crosses

LightFooteric Jan 18, 2004 11:32 AM

I have two flavi crosses and they are about a mounth apart in age and the oldest being about 3 1/2 months old. My question is, would it be a bad idea to try and intoduce each other so that they could grow up together and hopefully be male and female and breed? Is it a better plan to wait until they both reach adult size and hope I end up with male/female and introduce then?
thanks
eric

Hi Eric, First, its not useful to use ages, as age has little meaning with reptiles. I could have a one month old Cross that 20 inches and your 4 month old could be 12 inches. See what I mean. With reptiles, size is the meaningful measurement, not age.

Also, if you have a sexual pair, members of the gouldi complex rarely fight. But indeed, if they are raised together, they can perform better.

Also, about raising them together. If its to insure opposite sexs, I am not sure that is a good reason, unless they were raised from day one. If one dies because you do not know how to raise them, then what sex they are, has little meaning. If its about learning to get along with other monitors, then its a very good idea.

All decisions of this nature, are more based on your abilities and experience. If you are a beginer, you may be better off keeping them seperate. Then deal with the problems, if and when they occur at a later time. You will have more experience then. If you are experienced with successful rearing of monitors, then raising them in groups should not be a problem.

I do not know if your a beginer or not, but a common problem with beginers is, they aim at the wrong goal. They are concerned with getting aduld sexual pairs, when they should be concerned with the successful raising of the baby monitors they have.

My advice is, take one step at a time, become successful at your first step, then each following step, and you will not have so many problems. Good luck F

my larger cross is about 22" and the smaller is about 18". So far they are doing great, they eat like kings and grow like weeds. One reason I would like them to get along together is because I would only want to have to build one large cage for the two as adults. I don't know if I means anything but my larger cross has more girth and a thicker tail than the smaller, in comparison to size. I hope it will turn out a male and the other a female.

That post could have benefitted ME!

I wanted sexual pairs because I am not at ALL confident that I will continue to get fertile eggs, and continue to hatch them out. All that discussion about WC animals dying at any time, makes me cautious of how much time I have with my loves.
As I have said, breeding wasn't my goal with my pair..it just happened.

But now that I have offspring, I DO want F2. I do, I do, I don't know why..but grandlizards just seem so cool. The idea that I can see an animal go from egg to making another egg, and another little nose coming out...=)

That, and I want some idiots out there to take their ranting with them to h3ll...while I play with my baby lizards...heh. I am human, unfortunately.

Goon, why do you let them bother you? You are the one holding the babies.

I will remind you again, I started just like you. I simply took care of the monitors, the best I could, by reading them. I also had your results. Actually I had more results, but only because i decided to keep little monitors and you can house more of them.

Then all the monitor experts of the world attacked in hords. There was two meaningful trends. One was, I had the babies and Two was, they were normally ones who didn't or had far inferior results.

In truth, both of us knew we made lots and lots of mistakes, but we both succeeded. Which leaves only one question, why didn't they succeed? You should ask them that, then they will treat you like they treat me. hahahahahahahahahahaha, but we have the babies and we do not have to put them on our christmas card list.

Also, like you, there is something about the next generations, its not money or commerial, it just is. Why do we have to understand everything? or explain everything, it still is. Great going, FR
