Wort Jan 18, 2004 12:14 PM

HI im looking into buying a Bark Lizard but it seems there isnt alot of care sheets and information about them on the internet. I think i rember reading someones post who had one on this forum. If anyone knows I would really appericiate their response. I need to know what to feed them, and how often? If they need UV rays? Temp? Im planning on putting it in a 55 gallon tank, How big do they get? and any other things u think i should know before purchaseing one. If anyone knows about them please respond.

Size is probably around 9-10 inches total, maybe 4-5 SVL. That's a rough estimate. A 55 gallon aquarium would be more than ample to house one; a few would fit comfortably in something that big. I boubt they would benefit much from UV lighting considering they mostly hide and aren't too fond of lights. With temperature a gradient is always nice; not sure how hot to make it, but an area in the 85-90 degree range should be more than able. Obviously try to get more info on temp than I can give you. For substrate I'd go with a bark or bark/soil mix. Mine seem to prefer hiding under cork bark rather that hiding in hollows. I could be wrong, but they seem to prefer somewhat tighter hiding places. I really don't know a whole bunch about these critters, so hopefully someone will supplement this info and correct my possible mistakes.

Keep in mind I haven't had these lizards long. But yes, I feed them large crickets, mealworms and I've tossed them a few wax worms.

Yeah, good luck with your future animals. Mine seems to be doing fine, but their secretive nature makes it hard to check up on them. Keep in mind that these are very secretive animals. You will rarely get to see your leps run about the cage frollicking and eating their crickets. That's the biggest downside to these otherwise amazing animals, so keep that in mind. Occaisonally when I turn on the light I catch one out in the open, and sometimes I hear them moving, but that's about it. Have fun.
