Delta stopping venomous shipping????

salvadorii Jan 18, 2004 01:17 PM

Just got some news from pretty reliable sources that Delta is going to be stopping their shipment of venomous animals. Apparently, due to increase security, they will have to be able to open and inspect all shipments, and they say they will not do this with venomous snakes (and lizards i guess). Therefore, no more hots can be flown Delta. Dates are sketchy, but it sounds like this will take effect at the end of January/beginning of February.
If this is true, does anyone know who WILL ship venomous?

For private parties ...yes. For the government...No. Especially since 911.

Actually, private parties (assuming you mean private carriers, like UPS, FedEx and Delta) can open mail (or cargo) if they want. The U.S. constitution only protects you from the government. Therefore, if you ship via a private party, you allow them the capability to search your package for no reason at all. On the other hand, the federal government, or any government, needs a warrant to inspect packages. A warrant would be obtained by having dogs sniff packages or containers and if they gave a signal, that could be grounds for a warrant. The government CANNOT just randomly open packages sent through their services (U.S. Mail) without a warrant. The government could put pressure on Delta though to enforce random cargo checks, and then delta could quit shipping venomous siting this new policy.
