Housing male and female leos

royalcrown69 Jan 18, 2004 04:48 PM

Does anyone here keep their (1) male and (?) female leos together year round? I'm not talkin about breeding, but housing them in general.

I think one person does. I dunno if she/he has even had them mate or anything. But don't quote me on this i do believe someone will probably correct me.

I am just curious because i housed my tang male with two of my hi yellow females, and did have a succesful breeding without even any help from my part. I was just curious if this is somehow detremental to my leo's health, they are active and seem to be healthy, except that my male did become skinnier, so i moved him into his own tank. So now i have my leucistic male with my two females. Any comments or concerns are welcome. Thanks for reading.

Problem is, male leos are horndogs and will mate with all females (until pregnancy I think)

Problem being if your male is especially feisty and you only have one female he could mate with her to many consecutive times and tire her out... I guess this could be detrimental to his health as well.

They really don't require anything special to mate

I have 1 male and 2 females housed together in a 45 gallon tank. The male hangs out on his perch most of the time. I think I may have one female who is gravid, hopefully!!

i have mine in a 55 breeder, so there is enough space for the females to get away from the lil horny man.

ive heard that breeding puts stress on the male and that is why they get skinny??Also i heard that when a female and male do the dirty she retains sperm for more than one clutch of eggs.So they dont want to breed again cause theyre pregnat and the males get mad..this is only stuff i read on this forum so it mabey right or wrong?

I had 1.5 together for 6 years with no problems , and then another 0.4 added to them when my friend had to move, tank was 8*4*3 tho and alot of hides etc.
