how do i know if i have a dwarf or a giant pyxie frog?

japaba78 Jan 18, 2004 05:56 PM

I bought a baby pyxie frog at the last daytona show and it is now about three to four inches long right now. someone at one point told me that if it has a yellow stripe going down its spine it is a giant. also what is the best food source for these frogs?

thanks,
jason

Adult true pyxies lose the yellow stripe. Juvenile true pyxies normally have two bright green or yellow stripes along with the one on the dorsal. Dwarf pyxies normally have lounger snouts, and they have a more beige stripe down the middle. Dwarf pyxies keep a small spot on the typanum (ear drum) as well as having a more blotched coloration. If you can email me a picture then I could tell you what species.

As for food, hissing cockroaches, nightcrawlers, and crickets make a great staple diet. Other invertebrates can be fed, but not as much as those three which are easily available, easy to keep, and pretty healthy if cared for properly.

oogieboogie-i am hoping for a giant.

snakeguy88-i am almost completly inept with computers i am proud of myself for being savy enough to post on this forum, but i will see what i can do about getting a pic on. the dorsal strip is light green with molted spots on the sides. it does have a spot on each ear drum. but is has a pointed snout, but i am not sure if that is a sign of it still being young. also what is the ideal temp to keep this little guy at so far it has done well at low seventies, but would a higher temp be better?

thank you both for your repsonses and help,
jason

A little warmer would be better. The optimum temp for younger frogs is 80-85°. Andy
