Madagascar Radiated Tortoise??

TempestGarden Jan 18, 2004 06:44 PM

Hello everyone!!

I'm a noob here to the forum as well as to the world of tortoises as pets. I have never owned a tortoise as of yet, and I am looking around and trying to figure out what to get as my very first tortoise. I have a question about the Madagascar radiated tortoise (Geochelone radiata). Are these tortoises available in the pet trade and if so are they generally expensive as babies? I think they are quite beautiful and would love to have the opportunity to own one if possible. I am mostly looking for a small tortoise as an adult as I don't have a TON of room to keep a huge tortoise. Sorry, no sulcatas for me!! =) Thanks in advance...

Radiated tortoises are not a beginner tortoise. They are an endangered species. Babies usually cost at least $1000 and require a Captive Bred Wildlife permit. But you are right; they are beautiful. Good beginner tortoises are Russians, Greeks, or Redfoots. Babies of these species only cost around $125.

From your inquiry it sounds like you should study up on all that is involved with keeping a tortoise before getting one.

Then get information on the different species of tortoises available so that you can make an educated choice as to what type you should get and if you should get one.

Please do not act hastely for the animal's sake as well as your own.
