peruvian x hogg cross...more

bahreptiles Jan 18, 2004 06:47 PM

i didn't realize this would cause such a stink. i only wanted to post a pic and get some feedback on the look of the animal. not the purity of it or the detramental effects it has on the wild populations of hoggs or peruvians. i thought it to be a unique cross that looks cool. not better or worse, just diffrent. the cross was by accident and not intended to happen, but as we all know......[bleep] happens. i have hoggs, columbians, hypos, anerys, albinos and others. do you? if you said yes......you have a hybrid......case closed. thanks for the time.

Don't worry about it James. The "primary blaster" has been known to own Albinos.

produce ugly boas then by all means do so. There aren't any laws against it. Just dont think everyone else is going to look upon you efforts with admiration. You all post on a public forum then get offended when someone objects to your practices. I was once rude to Hermann about his posts on the subject(although I completely agree with his message) because I thought he was a little harsh in his critizism of these practices. I now admit I was wrong to do so because Hermann is only standing up for what is right. He is the one treated rudely because he has the courage to stand up and say that these breeding practices are wrong. To cross breed an animal that is extinct in its natural habitat is nothing short of immoral,as was wiping them out in the first place. Just because we were too late in our thinking to stop that crime does not mean we should sit to the side and watch another one committed. And to say the breeding was unintended is a joke. Did the Hog somehow open its cage and enter the cage of the Peruvian on its own? If you cant intentionally keep animals separated then what kind of keeper does that make you? If you all want to produce bumble bee purinam hypogs and pat each other on the back thats your business but the morph bloodlines should not be mixed with the remaining pure bloodlines. If you gave one ounce of care and respect to these animals it shouldnt be hard to do.

This is definately not morally wrong, since I don't hear of anyone dumping bucketloads of baby "pure" hoggs on the beaches of their original island(s). Far as I can tell, they're staying in captivity. If there are no wild ones left, how do we know we're breeding them true? If you read about the originals collected, you'll know there were darker ones too. I don't see ANY dark hoggs in collections today. They're being bred for a certain look, which probably never existed in the wild. Just because this cross happened, whether you like it or not, does not imply anything bad about its owner. I hate to perpetuate this cycle of disagreement, but I just thought my opinion had a place somewhere on this blatantly public forum.

Boas of the World says that animals identical to Hog Islands occur on mainland Honduras. So this whole extinct in the wild thing may not be entirely true. At any rate they might as well be extinct because there aren't any more coming into the country (same can be said for bearded dragons).
I personally can't say anything because it would make me a hybridizing hypocrite, as I work with KSB morphs.

It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

"nothing short of immoral" Are you kidding me!? How does cross breeding reduce the number of true hog islands? The parent snake is still a hog. Your assertion assumes that if the person did not cross it with another type of boa that he or she would have breed it to another hog and produced true hog babies (thus increasing the population) and that is not always the case. If the person wanted to make pure hog islands that is what he would have done. Further, if making a cross of an extinct animal is wrong because it fails to add to the population, then you are insinuating that all of us who keep hogs as pets, with no intention of breeding them, are "immoral" and that is offensive and wrong. There are many breeders who attempt to keep the pure hog lines going. Those who cross breed hogs or elect not to breed them at all do not adversely affect those who keep the breed pure. You are not a biologist or a zoologist. You are not going to return a single boa to the wild, ever. None of your speeches or complaints will do a single thing for the population of hogs. Pure lines are for hobbyist, not for repopulating the wilds, and people need to realize that. It is a HOBBY!!
