"The Wall" is finally complete...

DMexotics Jan 18, 2004 06:49 PM

Luckily with plastic caging, replacing them is hardly ever necessary. With this 13' wall, I used to have only eight 6' cages, mostly Visions. The Visions served their purpose just fine for the 8-9 years(?) I used them but I needed to house more adults than ever in the same amount of space. I made a move.

I checked out some of the PVC cages by Moonstruck Exotics and liked what I saw. Some of my boas are a little larger than most so I put four 6' Cravenhouse cages on the bottom. They are heavier, melamine cages that would make a solid base for the incredible combined weight of adult boas, water bowls and more cages.

I also added one more Pro-mist system and have a misting nozzle in each cage just like my arboreal caging on the other opposite wall. I can program it to go on/off multiple times per day at whatever durations I feel appropriate. All cages are heated by flex-watt on Helix thermostats in betweent the cages.

This is an investment easily justified as I was desperate for more cages and the babies produced in '03 easily covered the bill. Now we get to see how "at home" the snakes are when I start introducing pairs to eachother. The opposite side of the room is getting a new rack and it should be complete by next weekend. I pulled the old nasty carpet out during construction and once my new floor dimensions are available, I will get that fixed up too.

So, how difficult is it to do maintenance on the top row? I imagine not too bad, but I would hate to have to remove an angry animal from ontop of a ladder..lol

You never experience life until you have kids..then you realize what you should have done rather then what you did do

I am planning on housing mostly males up on top and bringing them down to the females below. I don't have any extremely aggressive boas but I want to be able to observe and note breeding, copulation, sheds, etc. without getting on a ladder. Fighting an angry momma for her babies while on a ladder wouldn't be pleasant either, I will do that with my feet planted on solid ground, LOL.

Is that room a part of the house, garage or a snkae room built in the backyard? I think your snakes will love to breed in that room. Much success in 2004.

Derek
