Found Some Driftwood at the Beach

Spectabilis73 Jan 18, 2004 06:56 PM

Hey,
I went to the beach today to collect some round polished rocks for my vivarium, and i found some perfect peices of driftwood! only problem, when i got home i started to wash it and i noticed that small peices kept coming off (it was deteriorating) i probably washed off a good deal of it... any good driftwood sealents? (can i use grapewood sealant?)
Also, my main concern, a bunch of white worm like things crawled out, the size of fruit fly larvea... I also saw a bunch of mite like things, but they were white... will this be a problem?

If the driftwood was found on an ocean beach, I don't think I would use it because of the salt content. You can find cypress driftwood on ebat often for really cheap. Cypress is an excellent driftwood for terrariums because it holds up to the humid conditions...most others will mold and begin to rot fairly quickly. Ghostwood is another good one and can be found at blackjungle.com

hmm... driftwood jsut isn't driftwood if it hasn't drifted in the ocean for years... there are alot of cypress trees here in monterey bay, ill go hunting and see if i can find any dead (driftwood) cypress wood.
what should i look for in the cypress wood? also is it ok if it has termites in it?

I don't know if that is true bud. There is freshwater drifwtood...my driftwood came from the cypress swamps of louisiana, as did most peoples. It may not be the "real thing" to you, but are you willing to risk your $45 frogs life on it?

Also, let me go ahead and say that I am not positive that saltwater driftwood would be harmful to the frogs, but just using my common sense, I would have to say find another source.

Again, check ebay....you can find nice pieces of cypress wood for under 5 bucks

I always find great driftwood on the shores of Lake Erie after the ice melts in the spring. It is unfortunatly a little hard to get to now.

yes, let me rephrase....Louisiana swamps are a good source for driftwood, but there are many others. And I know that most people may not get theirs from La.
