Buying a cornsnake

christiane Jan 18, 2004 09:48 PM

Hello all. I am brand new to this forum and looking for some advice. My family and I have been checking out cornsnakes for quite some time. Our first snake was a rough green and we thought a corn might be a good next step. I have read that some of the newer "morphs" might be more difficult to keep (i.e. feeding etc) than the "traditional" colors. Has anyone found this to be the case? We are most interested in the "grays"...the Anerythristic types. I have a daughter that is almost nine that LOVES all things critter....I don't expect something that will never bite, but definitely don't want to buy something that scares her to death. I will be the primary caretaker but would like for my daughter to be able to hold the snake as well. Any thoughts??

Thanks!
Christiane

Corn's are a good choice for a second snake.I would check the banners at the top of the forum and look for someone selling off there breeders.Buying a snake that is feeding, easier to hold because of size, and at that age a breeder would know if the snake is biter or not.Just make sure you talk to someone and tell them what you want for your daughter. My seven year old son loves my adult amels and can control them easily.I wont even let him hold my juvie hypos there to jumpy and one thinks it's related to the mamba family.Ive seen adults advertised from very respectable breeders for 125 dollars. That may seem like alot but it took money and time to get them that size.I dont own an anery, but i havent heard any horror stories about them either.Good Luck and have fun...Paul.

If you can go to a reptile show...GO. You will see all kinds of reptiles, esp snakes. You will be able to talk to alot of different people and their snakes. If Bill and Kathy Love are at a show in your area I'd be sure to go to that one. They can tell you all about the different morphs, behaviors, etc. My first snake was a corn and I've had her for a year now. They are very easy to care for and are quite tame. My ghost has never tried to bite me, but my amel has tried to 'taste' my fingers from time to time. I'm sure with some searching you can find the perfect addition for you and your daughter. Beware!! Corns can be addicting..I have 2 and want more.

You should be able to find an anery at a local reptile show with no problems. But like Gargoyle said, you might want to check the banners above, (South Mountain, Cornutopia...etc..) These breeders are well known and produce some of the nicest corns out there. They will also guide you in the right direction, as far as what you are looking for. I purchased my anery from Home Grown Herps and he is also a great guy to do business with. But like the above post said, once you have one, you will definately be looking for more. I started with 1 last year from SMR, and know am up to 10 corns, 3 ratsnakes and 1 BP. Good Luck with whatever you decide.
