Satanic or Spearpoint or other Uroplatus?

Insideoutsider13 Jan 18, 2004 09:51 PM

I am just considering getting a group of leaftail geckos from a specific species but I do not know the main ones that are sold in a pet store, nor do I know their prices and general care. Since I am only considering getting these geckos I would love to learn more about them, so I may be able to make a vivarium and include them in the future. I just need general information about some of the most available species and I heard that satanic and spearpoints were some of them. If anyone has any good websites just post the link and it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and have a great day!

The most common Uroplatus in retail are U. henkeli, U. sikorae, U. phantasticus and U. ebenaui. U. lineatus and fimbriatus are not uncommon. More importantly than finding out what is available, you have to do some homework to see which species you might be able to keep successfully. Some require seasonal cycling, some need to be kept cooler than other herps, etc. Keeping Uroplatus under the wrong environmental conditions will ultimately be fatal. Most Uroplatus in stores are wc and will need a long quarantine (30 days or more), fecals and often treatment for parasites, all while you try not to stress them out too much.

I came up with the idea of these guys from the most recent issue of reptile magazine. It gave some information but it seemed to general and not focused enough on the care of each individual. I was looking around and I just cannot really find the pricing on any species and none seem to be very available so it would take me some searching. Thanks for the list of species though, that should help quite a bit.

I'm a bit puzzled, the article was intended to give enough information for anyone wanting to try keeping these two species, rather than being general. What exactly do you think is missing?

A far as pricing goes, you get what you pay for. Wc are $60-$80 and cb usually $125 plus or minus. Don't buy hatchlings unless you're experienced with tiny geckos, three month old ones are well-started and a safer bet.
