Tempered glass...whole tank or just the bottom?

joseph1 Jan 18, 2004 10:11 PM

I have a 46 gallon bow front I need to drill, is it safe to drill the back or is the whole thing tempered? The sticker doesn't specify.

Hi: I had the same delima with my 29 Bow. I called around and it seemed that everyone thought that it was only the bottom that was tempered. I had a glass guy drill the side and everything went fine(except he put the hole in the wrong place! ) However, he did tell me that if that side of the glass shattered, I would just buy a new pc. from him and have him fix the tank. I took the chance cause I really liked the tank and I really wanted an open system. Try calling the manufacturer.

I know that All Glass aquariums temper the bottom glass only,
check out their tech page!

I went ahead and drilled it. It actually cut a lot faster than the thinner glass on my smaller tanks. Don't know why.
