Just not growing (long)

angelawina Jan 19, 2004 12:42 AM

I have an issue with two sub-adult leos. Missy was born in early june, and when I got her in July, she weighed 15 grams. Geico was born in early July, and weighed 18 grams in october. They are now 25 and 24 grams respectivly. I have them in a 20 long with Missy's YOUNGER sister (born in early July, and is now 35 grams), and between the three of them, they eat about 75-100 crickets per WEEK. Once Delores (35 grammer) hit 30 grams, I started hand feeding them 3-5 crickets a night to make sure she wasn't hogging the food! I've broght pinkies home three times now, and all three times, Geico wouldn't eat them. The other two did (delores even ate Geicos the last time). Their tails are VERY fat, they shed, and eat regularly. Geico is a modest eater, taking maybe two from me, and then eating one or two that I leave in there for them. Missy used to eat mealworms all the time, but refuses to look at them now. It's like she hasn't found the new dish in the new cage! I will probably put a divider in for Delores, so maybe she's not bulling them, but should I leave Missy and Geico in together too? I may put him in a 40 gal tall, that is divided in half (has tree frogs in the other half, and currently has crickets in it). I figure since they are not of breeding age, and show no interest in one and other, the whole opposite sex thing wouldn't be a problem, but hey! Ya never know. Anyway, I am open to suggestions!! THANKS GUYS!

I'm certainly no expert on this, but I have heard on ths forum and elsewhere that all Leo's have different growth rates. Yours may simply be late-bloomers.

Also, if they already have really fat tails, I wouldn't try stuffing them with food to try and get them to grow. You're likely to end up with obese geckos.

At 7 months, my females are normally 45 to 55 grams. Here's what I would do.
Seperate them all into smaller cages. House the male seperately on a more permanent basis. If the smaller female starts to get bigger in a month or so then you may be able to reintroduce her to her sister but if she doesn't keep her weight then you may have to seperate them again.

It is also important to keep the temperature up. If you can, get it up around 80° or more on the cool side and in the low 90°s on the warm side.

I would also keep them in smaller cages while you're watching them. 10 gallons is more than enough. Too much room may actually add to their stress.

and most obvious, get a fecal exam done. Try to get stool samples from all of them for the same test. Since they were all exposed together, you only need one.

Just out of curiousity - where did you get them?

I have two female Albino's that arent moving past 50 grams - I would like to see if maybe we got them from the same breeder.

Mine are still young yet - but I would like to know none the less.

Thanks,

Adam
