I agree with you on the issue of conservation. However, I don't have much hope because of this:

What makes a "locale" evolve is NATURE selecting certain traits to survive over others. This does not mean just phenotypic traits (ie color or pattern), it involves behavior traits, and physical ones we can't see. So even if we breed locale specific within a few generations it may look like a "guyanan" but inside its not....because man selected the breedings. In essense you are going to have a live picture.

The ONLY way to keep it true is keep the wild populations alive. How to do that, I don't know.
