geck with a voracious appetite!

jensinger Jan 19, 2004 08:17 AM

My gecko Lillith is a cricket/meal worm monster. She practically inhales them! But it never seems like they're enough because she stalks me around the room like I'm a giant cricket! When my fingers are in there, she keeps biting them and biting them like eventually a finger tip is going to fall off for her to eat! The other day I was looking at her closely through the glass and she lunged at me, bouncing off the glass... How will I ever know when enough food is enough for her? Is this something I should worry about?

mine used to do that too. but i fed her until she didnt want to eat no more. she ate 33 crickets! they were about this long each /////// then she laid like 6 poops the next day. now she doesnt eat like that no more.

Theres no satisfying my Dot. She eats non stop (30 mealwroms). She has only refused food (mealworms) once and thats cause the temps dropped so much it was almost as cold in the house as it was outside.
I took the day off work yesterday and installed lights that give off more heat. Plus i had cranked the heater and now the temps here are great and Dot is back to eating non stop.
It always amazes me at the amount of poop such a little creature can produce but seeing as she eats so much i guess its normal.

If she's under a year old, I would say to feed her until she stops eating, and do this everyday.

If she's over a year old, you should try to feed her until she's full, but maybe 3-4 feedings per week or so.

The logic behind all this is that when they're growing you want to get as much food into them as they want so that they grow big and strong. Once their growth rate decreases, you don't want them to eat too much and get fat.

Fin, I'm not sure... Assuming that they were kept in good condition their whole lives is there a way to approximate their age according to size? I think she is probably more than a year old, but Lillith and her roomie are my first two leopard geckos so I'm pretty new to all of this. = )

Thanks for your help!
