Concerned about a gash/cut

purdaddy Jan 19, 2004 12:13 PM

I noticed that my smallest femail leo has "developed" a gash or cut on her head. I thought that possibly she had run too fast and hit her head on the corner edge of one of the half moon pvc hides in the enclosure and that it wouldn't be much of a problem b/c it would heal and go away with subsequent sheds. Fortunately enough, she had a shed this last week. Unfortunately, the gash actually became larger. Now I'm concerned. I've attached pics of the gash/cut before the shed. I can get some of the way it looks today later if necessary. She's not acting that much more unusual. Just resting in the warmer areas of the enclosure more. Can anyone ease my mind here? Is this something to be more concerned about?

taking her off any loose substrate and putting her on papertowels for now. By the look of the second pic it appears to be sand or something inside the wound. This won't heal with material in it and it could get very infected. I've read alot on the forum about putting neosporin (?) on cuts or the stubs of dropped tails....maybe someone can better advise on that as i am not 100% sure.

Yes, neosporin will help. However, I must stress it is NOT the fix. Your leo needs to see a vet, we can only see through pictures, only a vet will be able to give you the correct diagnosis.

A vet might also have better medication to put on it thats safer for the gecko if ingested.

as advised take her off the sand and into an enclosure where she can be housed alone with paper towels[preferably] as substrate. try cleanin the wound with a soaked[water] q tip, and use neosporin as an antibacterial for the wound. if the gash doesnt heal i would take her to the vet. anyone with more knowledge in this correct me if my input has incorrect info. hope this helps n g luck
