Mealworm Beetles

clickman Jan 19, 2004 12:20 PM

I had an old container with reptilefood.com mealworm bedding (Looks like woodchips, but they say its a food source as well as bedding). I used them up, then switched to silkworms. I was pretty sure there were no mealworms left, and I had it sitting around for over a month. Didn't spray it with water or anything. Well, I opened it up last night to see how much bedding I had (Thinking of switching my leos back to mealworms) and saw that I must've missed two worms. Why? I had two beetles crawling up top. What's the life expectancy once in beetle form? I'm not exactly thrilled with having these beetles here, especially when I can't tell if they'll even breed, since I can't tell if they're male/female. Hopefully they'll just die off soon or something.

I just read a few articles this past week about just that.....letting animals go into the wild. And by no means do i want to come across as a nag, but i would like to express that releasing captive non native species of anything is not only cruel to the animal, or bug but also detremental to the environment. Up here theres been a problem with people releasing exotic fish into the waterways.....fish that have adapted to life in the cold waters of Canada, setting up residence, killing off native species etc.....one such species is the piarana (?) I'm not exactly sure if this particular fish can survive up here but frankly i won't be swimming in any lake or river anymore (it was mentioned in the article). native fish have interbred with other more agressive animals and we now have very agressive Bass that go after toes as well as lures.

Just a thought.........sorry to be naggy

I've had a beetle colony for over 2 months now & have yet to see single mealworm baby. What gives? I've got them on 1" of gutload w/ fresh water sources regularly.

Could be the temps. I had my first colony come about by accident, I didn't even realize i had baby worms until i went to change the bedding. They were sooooooooo tiny that it wasn't them that i actually saw but the movement in the bedding once i got the beetles out. My second attempt at breeding went well but it took forever for the worms to get big enough to feed. i think it was the temps, to cold. Try keeping the beetles warm.

Hope that helps Oh, i said the worms were small.....like a string of hair. They might be there but you can't see them.

Hmmmmmmmmm Ok. I dont' breed them specifically, i usually buy like 4000/month and i eventually get beetles. I just put them in a container and after a while i had baby worms. I'm not sure on the specifics about how to breed them, the temps needed, the differences in getting male and female beetles etc. You could ask someone who breeds them for a living... One of the feeder sites. I hope you get baby worms They are great for feeding baby geckos
