Red-footed tortoise

AJX3774 Jan 19, 2004 01:12 PM

I have a 2 month old Red-Footed tortoise. She is very active and eats well. Overall she seems to be very healthy. Yesterday her eyes seemed to be a little watery and today they are very watery almost as if shes crying. I dont know what the problem is. Everything else seems to be fine, The fluid in her eyes are clear and her nose is clear. I am not to familiar with red foots but have had all different types of turtles. Please if anyone has any idea get back to me. I just dont want anything to progress if she is coming down with something. Thank you for your time

More than likely your humidity is to low. If you raise the humidity for about 70-80% I bet the watery eyes will go away.

as long as you're certain that there are no symptoms of respiratory distress, it's probably dryness like someone else mentioned. depending on your substrate, that could maybe cause it, if something got in his/her eye, and the eye is just cleansing itself? i use bed-a-beast and my tort love digging into it, and he gets it all around his eyes... i mist him morning and night too, since our house is on the dry side.

Kelly is spot on. Get the humidity up to at least 70% and the watery eyes should go away. Worst case, make sure it's at least that high in its hide area. If they have a place they can retreat to that has high humidity that will stop the watery eyes as well.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I started to think maybe it was from the humidity being to low. I will get it raised and let you know how she turns out. Thanks again
