Hey Robyn, Got my temp gun today!

Rik Jan 19, 2004 02:17 PM

Nice piece of equipment. Gotta have one! You think all your temps are correct, till you use this thing. Thanks. Another question on the dirt, do you pack it down real good or do you just let the weight of the dirt pack itself?

it "packs" itself

and yeah, the Temp Guns are awesome, there is no substitute, and they show you how important accurate measurement (or lack thereof) really is

I purchased one of these from PE at the Daytona show and its the best husbandry device I have ever purchased. I honestly do not know how I ever got along in the past without one. This is a GREAT product and a bargain at $35. I highly recommend to anyone here to get one if you haven't already.

I have noticed a few "quirks" with it though. It seems to work best and be the most accurate if pointed at a right angle to the desired spot of measurement and at less than 12- 16 inches away. When using it at anything other than a 90 degree angle or more than 12 - 16 inches away I often get wildly varying results. I don't know if the much more expensive laser pointed temp guns function the same way but I assume they both operate on some type of infa red and work more or less the same?

all of the non contact temp guns use infrared, and it is a surface reflection measurement

so the better reflection you can get, which would be a straight shot coming off your object, the better the reading will be. if you are shooting at a sharp angle, you can imagine how a majority of the signal is not being returned, so the device has a harder time reading.

as for distance, the infrared comes out in a "cone" shape, so the further you are away from the object, the wider the cone, the wider the area is that you are measuring.

i shoot most reptile stuff at 8-12 inches, and more precise stuff like incubating eggs at just an inch or two, so i can get the smallest spot reading possible

AWESOME TOOL though, unblieveable feedback on setups, animals, and temps

thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the info on how the infrared works .... it explains allot on how under different circumstances ie: shooting at angles or different heights, I was getting fluctuations.
Although this info may seem elementary to you and probably most others .... this dummy would of never guest the cone shaped beam it emits without your explaination. I'd suggest putting this info into the directions which would definately help users get the most out of a super product.

You won't believe the difference in temperature a couple of inches makes. You will find differences in temperature that your regular thermometer can't tell you, and you set up will be so much better. This is the best $40.00 you will spend on your uromastyx.

I got one for my snakes and my boyfriend loved it so much I got him one to use in the garage (with the cars and his quadrunners). I use it to get the temp of my Ball Python's food - he will only accept a Frozen/Thawed mouse if it is 108 degrees at the least. Picky bugger!
