Head Shape and Scalation Differences in Dwarf Burmese - Comparison Pictures

SandBoaUK Jan 19, 2004 03:45 PM

Savannah from Morph Specialties mailed me these pictures for head comparison. The pictures have been edited, and the snakes have been cropped and placed into one image, for easy examining.

It is obvious there is a difference. Savannah has given her theory of them being more of a burrowing snake. This seems logical due to their raised eye position and nostrils. Also, giving these a substrate of aspen / bark mix, these animals have all burrowed, with only their heads appearing.

Here are the pictures:

Hmm, there is definately a difference in head scalation...an obvious difference. It's also interesting how the eyes of the "dwarf burmese" are placed closer to the nose.

It looks like a new variation on the burmese python...possibly a new species? well, they bear too much of a resemblence to the burmese python to call it a new species...so I guess just a new variation.

I still think it's way too early to even think about selling them though, and even if it is a new snake, the price is still ridiculous.

I woudl bet $100 that in the next 5 years this Dwarf burm is identified as a new species. Make that $200. The head scalation is different, eye placement and nostril palcement is different, the distance between them is differnt....its a new animal. IMHO of course.
