petco sucks at taking care of leos. their tails are so skinny! i got mine for xmas, so it wasnt my choice. anyway, her tail is still kinda skinny. i feed her 5 crickets usually every 2 days.
she usually doesnt go after her food right away either. are there any problems with what i do?

thanks

Besides the fact that she probably has a variety of parasites and illnesses she also sounds like she is very underfed... She should be eating that much or much more daily...

I would take her to a vet asap to check for diseases, and if she does, petco should reimburse you for vet bills

Usually when geckos have really skinny tails they have some kind of illness or infection, that appetite does not sound normal. Also, Petco is infamous for selling diseased animals. Make sure you have a warm side of 88-90° with UNDER TANK HEAT. If you don't, correct that problem. If eating does not improve take your gecko to a vet and get a fecal and treatment for any parasites/illness she has.

NOTE: If this gecko was purchased within 15 days call petco TODAY, say gecko is SICK and you want it taken to a vet under their 15-day health guarantee. That way, Petco will pick up the bill instead of you.

what is the best place to buy leos?

paradisio Jan 19, 2004 04:52 PM

Most reputable breederrs
Reputable sellers at expos

and maybe some pet stores if they have warranty and such, and ask them how they take care of them

StarGecko Jan 19, 2004 05:01 PM

From a reputable breeder, either reputable large-scale pro or caring smaller-scale hobbyist, either online or at a reptile show. Some people appreciate the individual care and attention a smaller scale breeder can provide to both their leos and to customers, others prefer to go with a well known name like Ron Tremper ww.leopardgecko.com. There are also some privately owned herp pet stores (like East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley, CA) that are fine places to buy a leo. I would not recommend for anyone to buy a leo at Petco or PetSmart.

reputable dealers and reputable stores are the best way to go. dont think that all petcos and petsmarts are bad, althought i havent seen one that took care of their animals properly. if your in the chicago-land area i know of 3 stores that carry excellent and healthy herps. you can tell whether or not the [store],[breeder] is a [good place],[person] to buy from with a few questions and observations. observe the animals to see if they are healthy. observe the condition of their enclosures:dirty, clean, etc. ask the [salesman],[breeder] questions that a knowledge-able herper should know.

Here's my only gecko from petco.I have had him for a long time and he is doing great.

angelawina Jan 21, 2004 07:33 PM

It's not petco as a WHOLE, it's the individual petcos. Plus, corprate gives us stupid rules to follow.. if you follow them, you kill them. I for one, do NOT follow the rules (putting them on sand, ect.) and I have had three sick gecko babies in 3 months I have been at this particular store. The other store I was at, had a good majority sick. It's the person running the show.

Your kidding right? Is this the same for petsmart? I thought it was just employee stupidity, but CORPORATE POLICY? That is just BS. If this is true, I am officially boycotting both of those stores, not that I have much love for them to begin with. I wonder if www.stoppetco.com domain name is free. I will gladly drive an extra 10 miles to avoid those butchers
