female panthers?

caine Jan 19, 2004 04:53 PM

I've got a six month old female panther, not to sure how old they are before they lay eggs not planning to breed at present but i've been told (maybe unreliably) that up to 50% of females can become egg bound on there first lay. Is this correct seems a bit harsh. Any info on females would be a help she is a pet but if breeding is a better option I have the means to arrange it. All the books I have in this area seem a little vague.

cheers

Panthers as well as a few other species of Chameleons can lay eggs as soon as 6 months of depending on their size. It isn't recommended to breed them until they are at least 1 year old. The main reason that females go eggbound is over feeding them during the production of the eggs. We do not recommend feeding a female Panther (or Veiled) that is of age to produce eggs any more than about 4 cricket (or other food items) per day. When we know our females are getting close to producing eggs or are producing eggs we cut back on the food even more. We cut back to feed just about every other day to prevent egg binding. the old "wives tail" that you had to breed females otherwise they would die is just plain false.
