Got my first PTS and have a breathing question

Looker Jan 19, 2004 05:17 PM

Is it normal to hear them breathing. I never owned a reptile that I could hear breath other than a ticked off snort. He/she is as sweet as could be a baby born last August. It is eating great and checking out its new surroundings. If they can't import them anymore why are there so many adults at the shows/internet for a decent price?

I don't really hear any of my 4 breathing...... got one thats seems always pissed when i put my face near its cage (also puffs his neck up), must be i am too ugly .....

Check out the number of posts since late summer on care, feeding, temp and humidity issues,,,, also a few infiting posts

I was wondering that also... the only thing i can figure is that way more were shipped in than demand....... Prices have gone up since i first saw them back on the market in 9/03.. the lowest i saw from an online seller was $110.000 each...... I know one wholesale outfit had them 5 for $300. I know most vendors have raised the price up some..... and then dropped it.... most are more expensive now....... I got my last one last month from a local pet shop....... they paid like 125$ for it. (i paid a Cash price..... a little more than cost plus shipping.

One never knows really if "Importation is stopped for ever" since these were not supposedly suppose to be imported either..

but i hear its been about 2 ish years since the last shipment....
From what i can read....... the choice is to leave them on their island homes. have them eaten and killed by development ( as they only like old growth areas .... or ship them out...... and hope for the best.... You might also find folks on both sides of that fence...... Leave them and they mostlikely die. ship them out and most will die as well...... throw the dice.

We all know that others like to tell others what to do!

If you can hear your MTS breathing, then more than likely it has a upper respitory infection. Is there any fluid coming out of its nose or mouth or any white crusty substance around the its nose or mouth, is it sneezing alot? Even if there is not any physical evidence it is still very likley that if you can hear it breathing that it has a respitory infection or is severely distressed from something!!!!!!!! I would make a vet visit, if it has a resp infection it is easy to clear up with oral baytril and higher enclosure temps!!!! If left untreated it can lead to serious problems even death!!!
What are your temps and humidity at Daytime/Nightime? What kind of enclosure are you keeping your MTS in?

As far as your question about why MTS are still at shows and online for LOW prices, My belief and opinion is that when they started being imported again everyone got the idea in their head that they better buy 1, 2, 3, or as many as they could get their hands on because of their percieved monetary value. Then when folks actually found out the requirements and time commitment it takes to properly maintain this high maintnance species, they decided to get rid of them and now there are so many in the market and no real high demand let alone someone willing to pay 400 plus dollars for one,the LOW current prices reflect the demand for them ( there is none right now in my opinion). I even bet they will be imported again!!!!!!!!!!! I just adopted a juvenile that someone bought and owned less than a month before they decided it wasnt for them!!!!!

Good Luck with your new addition and let us know what happens!!!!!!!!!

He/she is fine I was panicking at first I quess. It is like a pissed off snort when I first pick him up. I held him on my shoulder close to my ear and listened to him for a while he only does it if I move his position once he relaxes he is fine. He has a hot spot of 90 and a constant temp in the seventies. He has a large water bowl and I mist half the cage every other night he is about 8 inches snout to vent and is living in a 55 gallon right now. Thanks for th info guys
