Wanting Taiwan Beauty need information on care and housing

Uncloudy Jan 19, 2004 06:26 PM

I am interested in getting a Tiawan Beauty snake soon and have a few questions about them.
What size terrarium is required or recommended?
How is the temperment of these ratsnakes and how do they like handling?
Can I get two for one enclosure?
What are the feeding requirements?
and basically anything you can tell me about husbandry of these Asian Elaphe.
I am not completely new to snakes I already have a California Kingsnake, Brazilian Rainbow Boa, Creamsicle Okeetee Cornsnake, and an Okeetee (Abbott line) Cornsnake. Educating and learning more about snakes everyday.
What I would like is to have these Tiawan Beauties which Ive researched a little bit, but finding it hard to get complete information, prominantly displayed in my home as a centerpiece.
Peace, Love, and Happy Herping

I just recently traded for a trio(2.1) of cb '03 taiwans.
Most of the research that I did on these suggests that they are easy to care for.
They can be kept at a room temp of 78-82 deg's during the day with a drop to 72-76 deg's at night.
They do not need any other enclosure heat.
I have handled these just about everyday with no problem except when they are fed since I got them about 2 months.
They are voracious eaters, the female ate and then shed with 24 hours.
As far as enclosure sizes, I have been told that for now they can be kept in sweater boxes, as they mature they should be in an enclosure approx. 4'long x 2' deep x 18" or 2' high, they do like to climb.

They're basically 8 foot cornsnakes with a more voracious feeding response. They don't mind handling, but watch out if they think you're food. They also tend to get tangled up in household objects pretty easily. I love mine to death.

The Taiwan looks great.
Do you keep it on newspaper or some kind of substrate.
Also how about the humidity levels..

Although I'm sure it doesn't hurt, your humidity doesn't have to be that high, the standard 50-60% is fine in my experience.

Taiwans are by far my favorite colubrid. I currently have a pair that are about 2-3 years of age. The female is 6' and the male is probally around 5'. The female is the younger one and I think she will make it to 8'. I keep mine seperately in 55 gallong aquariums. When march rolls around I am going to put them together in a 4'by 2' by 2' wooden cage for breeding, and probally just keep them together all year round, unless problems occur.

Two years ago I got the female as a hatchling, very small and quick. She was in a ten gal for like 4 months then I moved her to 20 gal. She stayed in that for a while till I got her the 55 gal.

They are feeding machines with strong feeding responses. You will be surprized at what they can eat and how much. Their personalities are awesome too.

Taiwan beauties- the perennial answer to the question "What am I going to do with this extra rat?"

I want one SOOO bad, I WILL have one, but they aren't easy to find right now. I do know of a breeder about 3 hours from here that expects to have some this summer. I wish I didnt have to wait

Uncloudy Jan 21, 2004 07:04 AM

I am hoping to get a single female this spring or summer after the breeders have burmated their Tiawans this winter.
Truely a beautiful specimen Millionpoundbomb what breeder and where did you get that Tiawan Beauty, its one of the most stunning one's I've seen.
I still have more questions about Tiawans and seeking more specific information about them.
So it would be way helpful and informative to me and others if people who have experience or own Tiawan Beauties could share lot of more info on these great Asian Elaphe giants.
Thank You for all the reponses

Thanks for the compliment. I got her as a hatchling from East bay vivarium... Very yellow I must admit. My male is orange, and I prefer my female in coloration much more. Snakemuseum.com has an article on taiwans you can check out. They have some nice colored taiwans as well.
