Critical Care ???

veronicag Jan 19, 2004 06:53 PM

Does anyone know were to get the Critical Care powder that Doug Dix uses? I've heard that is can only be prescribed by a vet but it doesn't contain any meds. It's just a mixture of vitamins and minerals that help to jump start an herbivore after surgery or illness. I'd like to get some because the small sample that Doug Dix gave me is almost gone. www.Oxbowhay.com has it but I can't get a hold of them to see if they sell it. Any ideas? Does the Hill's A/D work and where to I get it?

By the way, Maya is doing much better with her pneumonia. She's still not eating though. That's why I'm quickly going through the Critical Care. But she's improving everyday, just slowly. She's been on Baytril for almost a week now.

I'm glad Maya's doing better! My vet carries the Critical Care - Dr. Hillmer at Oak Hills. I called, and they said you can just come in and pick it up from them, since it's a food supplement, not a medication. It's local, so you wouldn't have to wait for it to be mailed. I think it was about $7.00 per package, though that is my memory from when Joe was sick...

(Veronica and I live in the same town, for those of you wondering if I'm insane! )

Critical Care is made by Oxbow Hay you should be able to order it right off the website. My veterinary hospital carries it, but I have ordered it off the website several times. Hill's a/d is WAY too high in protein and fat. It is a calorie dense diet for carnivores (made from beef and chicken liver base). I would not rec. using it in Uros. Critial Care is a calorie dense diet for herbivores (origially designed for critically ill rabbits, but, has been used in many herbivorous reptile species successfully), much more appropriate for uros. Hope this helps.

If you are in a pinch you can use rabbit pellet slurry or vegetable baby food slurry until you can get the Critical Care. I personally soak rabbit pellets in warm water add calcium powder and a little banana baby food (adds a little sweetness and smell to attract them) and blend in a blender until smooth enough to feed with a syringe.

veronica,
I'm not sure about the product you are talking about, but you might want to check out herpnutrition.com. Sue has some enterics that she formulated herself for similar if not the same purpose.
good luck
