Gopher Snake won't feed...

gopherlover Jan 19, 2004 08:36 PM

I have had my San Diego Wild caught gophersnake for about 7 months now. He is roughly 6 feet long and used to feed like a glutton. In fact I named him Glutton. However, these past two to three months he has not fed. I attempted to brumate him but he wouldn't do that. I lowered temps and put him in the darkest/coldest closet in my house and he would doze off but not maintain anything. He found a way out of that cage and was crawling around on my tile floor early one morning before I left for school. Just before the last time he shed was the last time he ate. He ate three white mice and then went into shedding. After shedding I tried to feed him a smaller meal before I brumated him for the season. He wouldn't take it. Those mice I believe had something wrong with them because they all died that night when I put them back in a holding center. That was wierd because I quarentined them for a week before I attempted to feed them to Glutton. Since Glutton has now been back in his larger inclosure for a week or so I decided to try feeding again. I only tried one mouse and he acted scared of it and still hasn't eaten it. The mouse is still roaming around the cage but isn't of enough size for it to be a threat. I plan on leaving this mouse in there to see if he gets a change of heart. Pleas give me some info on this because things should be back to normal for him since he is now warmed up and photoperiod is now normal. I am concerned because of the estimated two and a half months he has gone without food. He is also somewhat skinny by comparisons I have seen of other sd gophers of his length. Any help is greatly apreciated. ->EvaN

well...nevermind....I guess liaving the mousey in the cage did the trick cause I walked back into my room and the snake is wandering around the cage and the mouse is no-where to be found. Not under anything and not hiding in his den. I just don't see a lump in my snake but there was no way for it to get out. I guess he just wanted some space. ->EvaN
