How should I do it?

poisonfrog420 Jan 19, 2004 08:48 PM

I am wanting to set up a new tank for my 4 D. Leucs but don't know where to start. I am thinking about getting a 29 gal. tank. I have two choice as far as lids; the glass lids and the plastic lids. I like the glass better, but will either one work? How much light do the plants need?

Also, what is the easiest way to set up a dart tank? I have read about the foam, coco panel, tree fern panels then mixing that with a false bottom and what not. I really have no idea what is going on with all of this stuff. I am just looking for a simple cheap way of making a nice tank. Can any one help me?

hi there,
ive got some suggestions. a 29 g if fine, and all you have to do is prepare yourself for what you want to see in the future. when you set up a tank like this, you should think about what it will look like in the future, not after set up. a false bottom is good, but you dont have to get complicated with it. a 2-3 inch layer of gravel will do it. home depot has a big back of river rock for under 3 dollars. wash it reallllllllly well before use. once thats done put a thick later of pre wet sphagnum moss down to create a barrier between the rocks and the next level. pat it down real good, and this is the time to make hills and valleys by adding more sphagnum where you nedd it. once its to your liking, you can either put layers of down to cover the entire area, or you can plant the tank out. use lush, tropical, humidity loving plants as decor. there are alot at home depot. you can put a layer of organic soil doen over the sphagnum to plant the plants, or you can just put soil where the plants are going to be. your choice. after that you must cover the soil areas with more sphagnum to create another layer. once everthing is where you want it you can put live moss sheets everwhere to cover the sphagnum. after all of that, decorate the tank with rocks and figure out a shallow pool area for the frogs. kepp it shallow, cause darts can drown. i have had a couple drown on me in what i thought was shallow. keep it simple and keep it easy to clean. i now make the tanks that i have shallow water areas by creating low areas after i put down the river rock. i just keep one area of the tank with less sphagnum so water say there. keep in mind you are supposed to keep water filled in the 2-3 inch layer if river rock, it keeps the tank humid, and the palnt watered. soon after set up, the plant get used to the humidty all day, and they push their roots through the sphagnum into the layer of rock. within a couple of months, you shouold have a lush terrarium and a suitable, inexpensive, virtually maintainance free environment, that the frogs will love. by the way use glass tops, they dont bow after a few months like plastic. i breeed darts too if you need any other help. have fun, hope i helped.

Thanks for your help. I think that should be really easy. Where would you get the tropical moss? How much light do the plants/moss need? Thanks again, Jake.

i forgot to tell you about light. a florecent strip light from home depot or walmart will do it. get a grow light. they are cheap and last for ever. you can get a strip light fixture anywhere. get it the full lenght of the tank, or a little shorter and that will be fine. you can also use aquarium hood lights for a better look. if youre good with tools, you can make a top for the tank with wood and install a regular fixutre in it from home depot. run it for 6-7 hours daily, thats it. put it on a timer for convinence, and youll be set. indirect sun light fro windows helps alot too.

6-7 hours a day? Bad advice! The only thing you'll have with a photoperiod that short is dead plants!
