raising humidity

K1LOS Jan 19, 2004 09:50 PM

okay, I am waiting for my Furcifer Pardalis and just got my hygrometer. When i set up the hygrometer in the cage, it only read 35%!!! What can i do to raise the humidity that much? I sprayed everything, and started the dripper, that raised it about 10%. So now how can i raise it another 30%? How can i keep humidity in a cage made of mostly screen?
Thanks alot

Find a large leafy live plant. That really helps to hold in the humidity as well as offering security (places to hide) for your cham.

Here is one of my jackson set ups so you can see what I mean by leafy :D .

Those are available at Home Depot or Lowe's in the garden center. They are dwarf umbrella plants - got a label here - it says "scheffelara arboricola".

Usually, the 10" potted plants are about $10 - and they give a year guarantee on the plant. Bonus!

Great plants...

A couple of tips...the air in your house may be very dry due to winter heating. Check the humidity in the room as it may surprise you. A room humidifier aimed at the cage and set to cycle on a lamp timer may help too. Also, you can hang clear plastic sheeting on the back and a side of the cage that you can move if the humdidity goes up again in warmer seasons.

I got it at a Walgreens store. It is for people but fits in the bottom of the cage and produces more fog than those reptile foggers.
I can also varie the amount of fog by switching it from low to high and I have it on a timer so it comes on in the morning and again in the late afternoon to early evening.

Sears sells a 3.5 gallon humidifier by kenmore that is really good...if its a small room there is also a 1.7gallon by kenmore that is very good...the 3.5 gallon took my basement from 25% to 50%

I use the small humidifier like anson's (she told me about it!) They are made by Sunbeam and I got mine at K-Mart. I have it right in Luna's cage and turn it off and on for a few hours at a time. I also have a towel draped down the back and white shower liners on either side and the front. The one in the front I raise/lower as needed. Her cage sits in a free standing closet of sorts with the top off, so it is surrounded on three sides. Might have to change it in summer, but for now....

I live in NH and the air is VERY dry in winter so I do all I can. She has lots of plants, a dripper (that she doesn't drink from!) and I mist. The warmer the room the the better to maintain humidity.
