Coleonyx Mitratus Question...

antonm Jan 19, 2004 10:31 PM

I recently aqcuired a coleonyx mitratus from a friend and have some concerns. I have had it for a couple of weeks now, I keep the temps around 75-85 night/day respectively. I keep the humidity up around 60 and have live plants in the tank. Fresh water is available to him. Onto my concern. He sleeps all day. He sleeps all night. He gets up when I poke him, goes to his hut, and goes to sleep. Comes back out a while later and goes to sleep on the floor. When I feed it, it wakes up, lively chases crickets and worms. Eats, then goes to sleep in the middle of the cage. When he walks around, his eyes are squinted except for when he hunts. Is all this normal or is my gecko surprisingly lazy or something? Any input appreciated...

How old is the lizard and how much are you feeding him? I've seen my C. variegatus do kind of the same thing when they eat their fill, except for the part about having the eyes closed all the time. I've always taken it as a sign that he's just stuffed and doesn't feel much like moving. Maybe try feeding him just a couple crix every day rather than a bunch every two days. As long as they aren't losing weight I've never worried much about it.

I've also noticed that, despite the fact that they're supposed to be "terrestrial", they really like to climb..maybe adding a good twisty branch will get him to be more active.

I got him a rock and some stuff to scale but he doesnt seem to use it. His coconut home is on a hill that I made so he likes going up there, maybe I'll raise that up. Thanks for the suggestions. I have no idea how old this guy is, we found him in our pet shop behind the sink...he just crawled out one day and I grabbed him and took him home. Cool lizard....
