Yes, rats.
Watersnakes and garter/ribbon snakes will take fish as well. As long as you feed a diet low in goldfish and one higher in baitfish you should be fine. They will also take nightcrawlers, but those should only be used occasionally. They make fairly good captives. Garters/ribbons probably are a better choice as waters get pretty large and have a nasty bite. Some small snakes like ringnecks will take small skinks, worms, and smaller snakes. They will also eat small soft bodied inverts. Good luck. Andy

Is you mom talking about live mice? Most captive bred pet snakes will take frozen rodents. Frozen is much safer for the snake. Just make sure you thaw and warm first. Now, if you can just get her to let you keep them in the freezer. Good luck.

To Buddhist hot dog vendor. "Make me one with everything."
she doesn't like the idea of having mice or rats in the freezer so that wont work
"You keep WHAT in your freezer?"
"Mice. And rats. If that bothers you, I can call them 'cows' instead."
borrowed from sig on another forum. cracks me up everytime.
frozen/thawed rodent eaters tend to be lower maintenace. maybe keep frozen rodents double bagged in ziplocks then put in box or tupperware so not as noticable in freezer? studying up on the snake you want may help convince her you're ready. have also seen posts that recommend parent handling a snake at a pet shop before buying. probably also find some info by searching old forums for "my mom" or "mom won't"
nice thing about garters is they're active in daytime (diurnal) but will require more frequent feeding/cleaning.
I love that quote.. I have to remember that when my husband starts complaining. But then again, there could be a three headed booger eater in there and he wouldnt notice, he never looks in the freezer anyway.
I think my friend had a ring neck snake that ate crickets. I maybe wrong, you could ask around the forum.
