Safe silicone ?

UpStateNYHERPER1 Jan 20, 2004 03:12 AM

I was hopeing someone could give me brand names that make a silicone safe for vivariums. And ive read that people have a hard time with silicone peeling from there foam backgrounds. And i would guess that if you were to score and scratch up the foam it would give the silicone something to grip and settel into.

I use All-Glass Aquariums 100% silicone aquarium sealant. I usually score the surfaces that I want to adhere just to give the bond a little extra grip.

BTW, there is black colored silicone and the clear type. I made the mistake of buying the black kind one time (you have to look pretty close on the label to differentiate the two). Hope this helps!

what size tubes can you find this in? I found DAP made aquarium silicone but it was in 4 oz for 5 bucks. And that would really add up

Well I went to Home Depot and picked up some silicone there. Just make sure that it is 100% silicone without any mold prohibiting additives or anything else. I use black for the sides and back of the tank and clear for any other work inside. Just make sure you let it all properly cure before adding water.

I have used silicone from ACE hardware in the past, on the back lable it said it was FDA approved food safe. Really 100% silicone is silicone, just make sure you don't get anything that is mildew resistant.
The aquarium silicone holds better however and I use it when ever I get the chance. I provided a link below to the place I have found to be about the cheapest.

Alot of the tubes i looked at didnt say on the label they did or didnt have mold inhibiters in it. So i was figuring that just cause i didnt see it on the package didnt mean it wsant in there. And ive heard that when a package says 100 silicome it can still have the fungacides in it.

what is the disadvantage of a fungicide in the silicone? does it harm the frog?

Yes it can, I just wanted to make sure you didn't buy a silicone caulk mixture.
