Do you guys gutload flies?

shopaholic Jan 20, 2004 04:06 AM

So, I bought the dry gutload tonight for the Crickets and the bedding for the mealworms. So, how bout them fries? Houseflies that is. Do we gut load those? Or do they go from emergence right into the cage? Did the fly breeders already gutload them in the larve stage? What source do you guys recommend for buying flies? Thanks-Maggie

Hi Maggie,

Yes... there is a gutload for houseflies.
It is offered when they start emerging - but they are still in containers - so they will eat it before being given to the chams.

Fly pupae can be purchased from a couple of sources. We have bought them from Beneficial Insectary. Their link is:
http://www.insectary.com/index.htm

Here's a tip: Once the pupae hatch and have fed 24 hrs on the gutload, you need to be able to release them into the cage. If you open the top, they will fly everywhere - so place the container in the frig for a few minutes (3min usually is enough), and the flies will stop flying and sit. Then you can remove the top and place the container in the cage. When the flies warm up - they start flying again.

Hope this helps,

Is it a liquid and do you buy it or make it yourself.
Also I checked out the site but saw no prices. Is there a minimum order?

flies will eat anything so you can give them anything! LOL! The Kammers recommend:

"...soft-boiled egg (mashed to a smooth consistency) with a few teaspoons of plain yogurt, baby rice cereal and some honey."

I do the fruit-on-a-skewer like for the ff once they are in the tank. I gave up giving them to luna for now since I am in and out of the cage too often and out they come!

I was wondering, too about that site. I was going to call but ordered from Skipio's instead.

As an aside: mral worms are not good for chams. You need to be feeding superworms (Zophobus) not meal worms (Tenebrio)

...just not as a staple food. See my response to your waxworm post above

Ed, check out this article in current ChamNews. They just shouldn't be used as a staple

No argument here, Lele. That's what I meant. The occassional meal worm is perfectly fine. Just not as a staple. Thanks for clarifying.

...it wouldn't be the end of the world if folks stopped feeding mealies, tho' would it? LOL!
